Crewe is the ideal place for a Steampunk Festival, because it barely existed before the arrival of the Grand Junction Railway, and the establishment of the Crewe Locomotive Works requiring a new town to house the workers. Crewe built steam locomotives – in fact they built them so well that the other competing factories ganged up to get an Act Of Parliament restricting the Crewe Locomotive Works to supplying ONLY their own railways! Crewe was so steeped in engineering excellence it was selected as the place for Rolls Royce to build Merlin aeroplane engines for the war effort, and the same factory today still makes Bentley motor cars.
In terms of getting to Crewe, there are an amazing 23 trains an hour that stop at Crewe Railway Station, and the M6 motorway at J16 is only a few miles away.
Crewe is well served by a variety of hotels, everything from budget to luxury.
There are also many place to enjoy Afternoon Tea!
The Municipal Buildings are a fine piece of Victorian architecture and makes a fine backdrop to Memorial Square, where a lot of free daytime entertainment happens.
